About
MAHĀGĀMI GURUKUL Center for Performing Arts
Founded in 1996, MAHĀGĀMI MGM Sangeet Academy is one of the premiere Arts Organisations in India aimed at the preservation, promotion, dissemination, research and social outreach of Indian traditional arts. Led by Parwati Dutta, its Founder-Director and eminent Kathak & Odissi artiste, MAHĀGĀMI, the only centre of its kind in Maharashtra state, is the first ISO-certified Arts center and an honorary member of the International Dance Council-UNESCO known for its unique gurukul-based pedagogical design, inter-disciplinary dialogues and path-breaking creative offerings. More than 2000 students and 150,000 seekers have benefitted from its pioneering efforts towards introducing and nurturing Kathak, Odissi, Dhrupad and other art forms in the Marathwada region.
With the formation of the MGM University in 2019, the Performing Arts Department was named as MAHĀGĀMI GURUKUL Center for Performing Arts with an aim to facilitate immersive learning with an academic edge and global worldview within the University ecosystem. The pedagogy is based on Gurukul Pattern that is widely accepted and acknowledged by Performing Arts departments across many Indian Universities. The synergy between Shāstra-Prayoga-Paramparā-Anusandhān (Textual-Praxis-Tradition-Research) forms the basis of the Gurukul-based institutional pedagogy known as MAHĀGĀMI GURUKUL which is coupled with the Choice-based credit system, also incorporating the vision towards implementation of National Education Policy (NEP).
MAHĀGĀMI GURUKUL Center for Performing Arts offers University programs in Performing Arts and Indic Studies aimed at empowering the artistically inclined, intellectually awakened learners towards realising a future as mainstream artists, knowledgeable teachers, researchers, curators, arts administrators and policy makers.

Dean's Message
Co-sojourner of great pilgrims… sojourner of a supreme journey…
These etymological meanings of ‘MAHAGAMI’ have been the source of inspiration and guiding spirit for the kalapathiks (art dwellers) here since the day of its inception. The acronym ‘MAHAGAMI’ formed from MAHATMA GANDHI MISSION symbolizes truth, purity and perseverance.
To describe MAHAGAMI as an arts organization only would probably limit its scope and expanse.
To me, MAHAGAMI is a pilgrim surpassing the material… transcending the cerebral… seeking the spiritual… it is very inspiring and satisfying to see our dedicated team work voluntarily for the cause of art in the campus that has been aptly named ‘Rtaa’, a word derived from ‘Rtam’ meaning truth and cosmic its journey, MAHAGAMI, a poised, articulate member of the global arts commune, has few performers and teachers and many rasikas to its credit and I stand as a proud spectator of this remarkable growth eager to realize the manifold existence of MAHAGAMI, the sojourner.
Guru Parwati Dutta
Director, Mahatma Gandhi Mission Sangeet Academy (MAHAGAMI)
Dean, Performing Arts, MGM University
